Luis Suárez relishing 'incredible challenge' of league and cup double

The star of the spectacular show at Deportivo on Wednesday discusses the turnaround in FC Barcelona’s fortunes and the prospect of ending the season with two major trophies

Barça left Riazor on Wednesday night with an 8-0 defeat of Deportivo behind them, the ideal tonic after the negative streak of results in recent matches. And the star of the show was undoubtedly Luis Suárez, who not only scored four goals but also supplied three assists.

The overjoyed Uruguayan striker commented on the performance the day after by saying “we had struggled in a lot of games and were having a really bad time of it. We are human, and felt gutted with the defeats, and we really needed a game like that.”

Speaking at the presentation of the latest edition of the charity sports book ‘Relats Solidaris de l’esport’, Suárez went on to say that “we were the better team. We weren’t too worried because we knew we’d played a great match against Valencia and that although we missed a lot of goals, we left a good image of ourselves.”

Suárez added that he doesn’t like it when people focus too much on the trident and not on the team as a whole. “We know we help the team a lot” he said. “But nobody is untouchable. When we win titles we are all invincible, so when we lose, we all play a part as well.”

On his 49 goals

“It is a privilege and an honour to outscore Ronaldo because of what that means and what a great player he was”.

“I enjoy spending every day in the best team in the world, and it is an honour to have surpassed one of the footballing greats. But it is of course impossible to beat Messi’s records”.

On Barça’s Liga chances

“We know it is in our own hands and we have to remember that as long as we win our last four games, then we’ll be champions”.

“We are top of the league and we are aware that we can win the championship. We’re not considering any other scenario … It would be really nice to win the double – it’s an incredible challenge.”

On the negative streak

“We are human beings. We are not machines. We all have our ups and downs”.

Neymar Jr has come in for a lot of criticism and it hurts him. He’s a friend and a team-mate and he has feelings like anyone else. We are all trying to support him. He has always had a positive attitude, he never drops his head. He’s a fighter and he always will be”.

“Sometimes you laugh because you miss easy chances, but we always have faith in the quality in this team. We knew that the good results would eventually come back”.
