FC Barcelona publishes a guide to the 34 species present at the Spotify Camp Nou and the Palau Blaugrana

An initiative by the Sustainability Department, this unique guide covers the biodiversity of the fauna in and around the Club

A wealth of biodiversity can be spotted in and around the Spotify Camp Nou and the Palau Blaugrana. Accordingly, FC Barcelona has created and published the 'Guide to Biodiversity at FC Barcelona in Les Corts' (available only in Catalan and Spanish), which collates the 34 species found there, whether it is used for their home, or as a hunting ground or resting area. This unique initiative comes from the Club's Sustainability Department, and is another example of how Barça is making the effort to protect the biodiversity within its grounds.

Our planet is currently experiencing climate change due to human activities, which directly impacts every species i.e. biodiversity. Only 17% and 8% of land and sea areas are protected respectively. Hence the importance of the historic agreement on 19 December at the latest UN Biodiversity Conference (COP 15) held in Montreal, Canada,  to protect 30% of the planet's biodiversity by 2030 and to provide funding to enable a range of measures to reverse the environmental threat we are facing. In this context, FC Barcelona is working to implement every possible measure to boost and conserve biodiversity, such as installing locations to improve birds' rest or this guide itself.

Let's not forget that the Club already complies with animal protection laws. This is why the work scheduled at the Spotify Camp Nou already included prior studies and preventive measures in order to try to affect these species' lives as little as possible. As stated in the guide, “in biological terms, the stadium is a cliff and the surrounding area is open and wooded. As a result, the species encountered are on the one hand, cliff dwellers, and on the other, those associated with sparsely wooded environments”.

A shared ecosystem

The 'Guide to Biodiversity at FC Barcelona in Les Corts' (available only in Catalan and Spanish) introduces the 31 birds, 2 reptiles and 1 mammal that live in the stadium, with more and more nests having been built over the years. As such, it represents a collation of observations during research to produce a census of the species in the installations. The guide covers the species, a description of their status, diet, and nesting type, and the months they can be spotted at the Spotify Camp Nou.

The guide also explains if these species have offspring and if they are either temporary or permanent residents, depending on whether or not they are migratory or only use the area for feeding. As such, this is an example of the Club's activities being compatible and sharing a living space with the species found there.
